How to Fix an Invalid NAICS Code in Your OSHA ITA CSV

The NAICS value is missing, not six digits, or not the right code for the establishment.

What this means

The ITA uses NAICS to understand the establishment's industry and filing requirement. A malformed NAICS value can block upload or create coverage confusion.

Why this happens

  • The CSV uses a two-, three-, or four-digit industry prefix instead of six digits.
  • The NAICS field includes spaces, dashes, or text.
  • A company-level NAICS was used for every establishment even when locations differ.
  • The filer copied a SIC code instead of a NAICS code.

How to fix it manually

  • Confirm the establishment's six-digit NAICS code.
  • Remove nonnumeric characters.
  • Check each establishment separately in multi-location files.
  • Use OSHA's Coverage Application if the code affects filing status.

How ITAReady helps

ITA Ready flags malformed NAICS values and routes uncertain users to the coverage checker before filing.
